the Al-Qurain Martyrs Museum

The Al-Qurain Martyrs Museum is one of the most significant and well-known landmarks in Kuwait. People from all over the world come to visit this historic house, known as Bayt Al-Qurain, to learn about its story and the role it played during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Over time, this house was transformed into a memorial museum, showcasing the sacrifices made by Kuwaiti resistance fighters.

The National Council for Culture, Arts, and Letters regularly oversees the maintenance and renovation of the museum, preserving this vital symbol of Kuwaiti history for future generations. Inside the museum, visitors can find detailed models of the weapons used during the battle, along with other relics from that era.

Through the real estate platform Sakan, visitors and residents alike can explore luxurious properties across Kuwait. The platform provides insights into top neighborhoods, highlighting the benefits of living in each and listing premium properties for rent and sale — including apartments for rent in Kuwait and specifically in areas like Hawally.

What is the Story Behind Bayt Al-Qurain?

The story of Bayt Al-Qurain symbolizes the bravery and resistance of the Kuwaiti people during the Iraqi invasion. It was transformed into a museum to commemorate the fallen heroes of that battle. The museum displays weapons and offers extensive information about that tragic period in Kuwaiti history.

Located in the Al-Qurain area, this house served as a base for a group of Kuwaiti resistance fighters. On February 24, 1991, a brutal battle took place between Iraqi forces and the resistance group stationed there. The fight resulted in the death of 12 Kuwaiti fighters.

Following the incident, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah issued a decree to convert the house into a national museum, naming it the Al-Qurain Martyrs Museum. The Higher Council for Culture, Arts, and Letters was tasked with renovating and preserving the house, turning it into a dignified and permanent memorial site.

If you’re also seeking a place to rent or buy for privacy and safety, you’ll find numerous listings such as studios for rent in the capital and apartments for sale across Kuwait.

What Are the Details of the Al-Qurain Battle in Kuwait?

The Al-Qurain battle began in the early morning hours when a unit from the Iraqi army, supported by intelligence operatives, approached the house under the pretext of conducting a search. Some accounts claim that the real intention was to loot the contents of the home.

The resistance members inside refused to cooperate, and one Iraqi soldier attempted to sneak into the house. A Kuwaiti fighter saw him and opened fire. Inside the house were 19 resistance members from a group known as Messila.

The Iraqi forces surrounded the house and launched an aggressive assault using tanks and RPGs. In contrast, the Kuwaiti fighters were lightly armed. The battle lasted until 6 p.m. and ended with three fighters killed during the combat, while nine were captured and later executed after brutal torture. Only seven members managed to survive.

Impact of the Battle

The transformation of this home into a museum has turned it into a symbol of heroism and national pride. General Norman Schwarzkopf, the commander of coalition forces during the Gulf War, visited the site in April 1994 and said:
“Standing here makes me wish we had launched the attack four days earlier—perhaps this tragedy could have been avoided.”

The Iraqi invasion left deep wounds in Kuwait, both human and material. But the country rose again, stronger and more united. The Al-Qurain Martyrs Museum stands as a living testament to that resilience and bravery.
